Former EVE Online Developers Craft a Persistent Society Simulation MMO
Klang Games, spearheaded by two former developers from EVE Online, is making significant strides with its ambitious MMO project, Seed. This game distinguishes itself by maintaining character persistence even when players are offline, a concept that underpins its deep simulation mechanics. At the recent GDC, Klang Games unveiled a new trailer for Seed, featuring music by Björk, alongside a comprehensive overview of the game's current development status, highlighting its blend of real-time strategy and social simulation.
Drawing inspiration from acclaimed titles such as The Sims and Dwarf Fortress, as noted by CEO Mundi Vondi, Seed offers an unparalleled level of detail in its societal simulation. This includes intricate systems governing taxation, player-enforced laws within societies, and even the individual anatomical structures of characters. The game encourages players to establish and manage diverse societies, from sprawling cyberpunk metropolises supported by vast player networks to intimate hamlets focused on communal crafting and resource management. A notable feature is the ability for players to manage multiple 'Seedling' characters across different societies, allowing for varied in-game experiences. The game has already showcased instances of dynamic player interaction, including a "bread dispute" in its closed beta that led to a governmental overthrow, underscoring its EVE Online heritage in fostering complex player-driven narratives, albeit with a focus on less combative interactions.
Seed aims to appeal to both hardcore simulation enthusiasts and players who enjoy the "caretaker" aspects of games like The Sims 4. The introduction of a mobile companion app will allow players to monitor their Seedlings' activities and reassign tasks remotely. While the game incorporates generative AI for character interactions, promising more engaging conversations as characters gain experience, its current implementation raises questions about the depth of these interactions. Seed is currently in closed beta, with Klang Games gradually expanding the testing pool as they refine the society simulation ahead of a wider launch.
The creation of Seed by veterans of EVE Online signifies a compelling evolution in the MMO genre, emphasizing persistent characters and intricate player-governed societies. This innovative approach promises a dynamic and ever-evolving world where every player's action contributes to a grander, collective narrative, fostering a unique blend of strategic depth and social engagement that encourages positive collaboration and community building.
