He contends that an excessive focus on avoiding delays often compromises the final quality of games, leading to adverse outcomes for both developers and players.
Hall’s perspective emerged during a recent Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, where he engaged with the gaming community. He highlighted the substantial financial investment required to produce games and the significant impact that timing can have on these costs. While acknowledging the financial pressures that drive developers to meet release schedules, he argued that a considerable portion of the rush to launch stems from a 'target fixation' on perception rather than purely fiscal concerns. Developers, he suggested, often fear disappointing players or losing momentum within the hype cycle, inadvertently contributing to detrimental practices such as 'crunch culture.'
To counteract this, Hall appealed directly to consumers, empowering them to signal to major platform holders, including Xbox and PlayStation, that prioritizing game quality through delays is acceptable. He shared RocketWerkz's own experiences, citing instances where their game, Icarus, underwent multiple postponements for its Dangerous Horizons expansion and console version. He humorously noted the paradoxical advice given to players: "personally: don't preorder games, folks. commercially: please preorder games, as it's the only way PlayStation/Xbox notice us."
Hall emphasized that many delays arise from a failure to meet quality standards, often due to financial constraints that prevent developers from investing more time and resources. He pointed to the 'Mixed' Steam rating received by Icarus at launch as a direct consequence of not delaying sufficiently to ensure a higher quality product. This experience solidified his belief that a more forgiving approach to delays is crucial for delivering superior gaming experiences.
