Bungie Introduces Experimental Duos Mode for Marathon
Following its March 5 debut, Bungie's latest title, Marathon, has seen an overwhelming request from its player base for a duos mode. Game director Joseph Ziegler recently announced the introduction of an experimental duos queue, showcasing the development team's agile response to community feedback.
Marathon Gears Up for Experimental Duos Queue on March 18
In a significant move for the Marathon community, game director Joseph Ziegler confirmed on Monday, March 18, that an experimental duos queue would be activated. This new feature, dubbed “Perimeter – Duo,” will launch at 10 AM PT and be available exclusively on the Perimeter map for approximately two weeks, though the duration is subject to adjustment based on testing outcomes. Players interested in participating must form a group of two beforehand, as no direct matchmaking will be provided for this initial test. Ziegler acknowledged that this early iteration might present some rough edges but emphasized its role in gathering crucial player insights to refine the duos experience. He clarified that this is not the final version, and future adjustments to both structure and user interface are anticipated. Notably, Rook, the solo-exclusive runner shell, will not be compatible with this new lobby.
The primary hurdle for integrating a duos mode lies in balancing gameplay. Current Marathon matches typically feature multiple teams of three alongside solo Rooks. The varying sizes of maps necessitate careful calibration to ensure the right number of squads—neither too many, leading to constant skirmishes, nor too few, making the map feel deserted. Perimeter, chosen for this test due to its expansive nature and player familiarity, usually hosts about five teams of three. For the duos test, this could translate to seven or eight pairs. Bungie’s swift action in addressing player requests, such as the duos mode, demonstrates a commitment to real-time game evolution. Players have expressed a strong desire for duos, as playing solo can be disadvantageous, especially with faction contract quests that require team effort. The challenges of random matchmaking, where communication and coordination are often lacking, further underscore the need for a more structured team-play option. The introduction of duos aims to enhance the experience for players who prefer to team up with a single friend, offering a potentially more satisfying and cooperative gameplay environment.
