Frank Klepacki: RTS Genre Thrives, Needs More Innovation

Frank Klepacki, a celebrated figure in game music, known for his contributions to titles like 'Eye of the Beholder 2', firmly rejects the notion that the real-time strategy genre is obsolete. Having crafted numerous memorable soundtracks, including those for iconic RTS games such as Command & Conquer and Dune 2, Klepacki expresses strong disagreement with claims of the genre's decline.

He observed a prevailing sentiment a decade ago suggesting the RTS genre was fading, questioning the viability of developing games within it. However, Klepacki firmly believes that as long as new RTS titles continue to emerge, the genre remains vibrant. He posits that other gaming categories may temporarily capture more attention, but this is merely a natural ebb and flow within the industry, much like the resurgence seen in RPGs and flight simulators over time. Furthermore, he points to a cautious approach among major developers, indicating that larger studios often shy away from innovative concepts, leaving creative exploration primarily to independent game makers.

The real-time strategy genre is indeed experiencing a renaissance, evidenced by recent developments such as a new campaign for Warcraft 3, the anticipation of a Game of Thrones RTS, and the return of beloved franchises like Company of Heroes and Ruse. Even established series like Age of Empires and Age of Mythology maintain their presence. While a new StarCraft game is shifting towards the shooter genre, Blizzard continues to support StarCraft 2. Although the era of star-studded Hollywood casts in RTS titles might be less prevalent now, the genre itself is undeniably vibrant and resilient.

The enduring success of real-time strategy games highlights the importance of innovation and adaptability in the entertainment industry. Developers should embrace bold ideas, drawing inspiration from the past while bravely exploring new directions. This forward-thinking approach will ensure the continued evolution and popularity of beloved game genres, inspiring both creators and players for generations to come.
