Capcom Reflects on Onimusha: Way of the Sword's Difficulty

When Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched, a key discussion point revolved around its perceived ease. Early previews featuring static adversaries led some action game enthusiasts, accustomed to titles like Sekiro or Nioh, to anticipate a straightforward experience. While subsequent playthroughs of the full game largely allayed these concerns, it remained true that common enemies offered less resistance than the formidable bosses, often serving primarily as environmental obstacles.

The decision to gate the game's higher difficulty settings until after completing the main story didn't resonate well with players seeking an immediate challenge. This is reflected in the popularity of community modifications designed to enhance enemy aggression. However, many, including this writer, found the game enjoyable without needing the extreme difficulty found in other genre entries. Capcom, after analyzing player metrics over the past month, appears content with the established difficulty curve.

Director Satoru Nihei revealed that data analysis indicated player experiences largely aligned with their design goals. He noted that while players encountered moments of difficulty and occasional defeats, they were consistently able to surmount these challenges and advance. The studio's intention was to deliver a narrative-driven experience with sufficient challenge to foster a sense of accomplishment, rather than creating an exceptionally difficult game. They believe they have achieved this balance. Nihei also acknowledged player feedback regarding the game's duration and the recurrence of boss battles, explaining that the game's length was deliberately set at approximately 20 hours to provide substantial content without becoming overly protracted like some open-world titles. The design prioritised a mostly linear progression, with optional exploration for those interested. Regarding the repeated boss encounters, Nihei clarified that while the team understood the desire for more variety, they aimed to create engaging battles that players would enjoy revisiting.

The developers' commitment to player satisfaction and a balanced gaming experience shines through in their transparent approach to design choices. By carefully considering player data and feedback, they strive to craft games that are both challenging and rewarding, ultimately fostering a positive and engaging environment for the gaming community.
